6/22/09   Since the inaugural MIT Oncology Symposium in 2002, the last time that MIT cancer researchers organized a symposium to talk about metastasis, scientists have made great advances in understanding how cancer cells break free from their original location and spread throughout the body. Researchers from around the world convened at MIT to discuss our current understanding of metastasis at the 9th annual  KI oncology symposium.

RNA SNIPPET SUPPRESSES SPREAD OF BREAST CANCER RNA SNIPPET SUPPRESSES SPREAD OF BREAST CANCER

6/12/09 High levels of a tiny fragment of RNA appear to suppress the spread of breast cancer in mice, according to researchers at the Koch Institute and Whitehead Institute. Measuring levels of this so-called microRNA, which is also associated with metastatic breast cancer in humans, may more accurately predict the likelihood of metastasis (which accounts for 90 percent of cancer-related deaths) and ultimately help improve patient outcomes.

5/27/09 Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) awarded $73.6 million for novel, groundbreaking cancer research. KI's Sangeeta Bhatia is part of the Bioengineering and Clinical Applications of Circulating Tumor Cells (CTC) Dream Team.  Also included on the CTC Dream Team are researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Harvard Medical School, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.
